Tool: Google Slides

Description

  • Google Slides is tool that can be used to create Hyperdocs. You can log into your account to edit it from any computer, and students can easily access it once you give them the link. Additionally, you can input links on any page -- including links to assessments such as ones on Google Forms.

Opportunities

  • As the standard states, it's important that students understand and uphold respect for others when using and sharing intellectual property. Because Google Slides allows students to edit documents on their end, they learn ways to interact with others respectfully on this platform through using it.

  • When students log onto a Google Slides, an icon (usually anonymous) pops up. That becomes their avatar -- essentially their digital identity. Their reputation and performance in the digital world can be seen by their peers who are also on the slides. This is an impactful way for students to develop in that aspect.

  • Instructors can view students' work on the slides and provide feedback in the form of comments.

Limitations

  • Not all students may have access to computers and reliable WiFi! :( So, in order to update or save any work on a Google Doc, they'd have to find a source of internet.

  • In terms of digital citizenship, this platform does not specifically teach students how to engage in legal or ethical behavior. I would argue it's difficult not to be ethical or legal when using Google Slides.

The photo above shows the final screen of the hyperdoc I created using GoogleSlides. All the editing buttons are at the top, including the button to share the link. I can access each slide by clicking on it. Importantly, I can embed links on any page anytime, making this a great platform for hyperdocs. Students can scroll through each slide and do the lesson at their own paces.

Reflection:

While creating the hyperdoc using GoogleSlides, I realized the platform gave me an extreme amount of flexibility to make changes as I needed for my lessons. I really like that I can edit the GoogleSlides even after I have sent them out to students. As long as they have the original link to the slides, they will always have an updated version of the lesson. I can definitely see myself using this platform as a way to plan mini-lessons for students to work through on their own or in groups. I can also see myself using GoogleSlides as a lesson-planning platform! I know as a future educator, I will be doing a lot of lesson planning, so having a reliable, accessible, and safe platform to use is key. Most importantly, using the platform often in my classrooms will help students build their digital citizenship. They will always feel an appropriate amount of responsibility for their behaviors on the platform, and that's a skill they will take with them.
